Happy Birthday, Charles Dickens!

Today is the infamous author, Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday. Why is the world celebrating a long gone man’s date of birth though? Why is it so important for us all to mention the fact that he’d be 200 years old if he were still alive today?

Maybe it’s the fact that Charles Dickens is considered to be one of the most influential and admired authors this world has ever known. He gave us the great works of Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, Oliver TwistBleak House and David Copperfield — to name a few. His stories have been told over and over again, through his novels and plays adapted from his novels.

What is your favourite Charles Dickens novel?

For all you Canadians out there (and non-Canadians who care about us)

It’s time for the Battle of the Books. A few days ago, CBC released the trailers for the Canada Reads 2012 True Stories books. I’ve had a look through all the trailers on their page, and while all of the authors have had unbelievable experiences and gripping stories to tell, I think the book I most want to read is Prisoner of Tehran, by Marina Nemat.

However, (spoiler alert!) I just checked the website for the first elimination and Prisoner of Tehran was the first to go. Sad times.

Which book do you think deserves to win?

2012′s Book-to-Movie Adaptions!

This year is a big year for book adaptions, and I can’t wait until they start hitting the theaters. Huffington Post published a slideshow of their top 10 book-to-movie adaptions that will be released in 2012, and I agree with a lot of them. I’ve posted my favourites from their picks, as well as my own picks.

Their Picks:

My Picks:

* The movie version of The Borrowers is actually called The Secret World of Arrietty. *

Which ones are you looking forward to?

Waterstones’ Picks

We all love a good book list. Waterstones, a major bookstore chain in the UK, has compiled a list of 2012′s best debuts. It’s nice to know that a lot of them were on my own personal list — such as Shelter by Frances Greenslade, Absolution by Patrick Flanery, The Land of Decoration by Grace McCleen, The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan, Signs of Life by Anna Raverat, and The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. Okay, so pretty much all of them. I can’t help it! They all sound so good. This is going to be a good year for books  =)
